A permitted development (PD) is a legal route to undertaking a change in structure to your home without having to get planning permission.
Permitted development rights for loft conversions were made much simpler in 2008 when the government extended permitted development rights. The main change was that the roof now has its own volume of permitted development. The changes implemented make most loft conversions a permitted development.
Most dormers, hip to gables, and even L shaped dormers are permitted developments. Permitted development rights do not apply to flats or maisonettes and properties is designated areas such as conservation areas, listed buildings and areas of outstanding natural beauty. Permitted development rights need to be intact as some homes do have them removed; this is more common in new estates.
